Authentic Making Process
Crafting authentic, charcoal-free botanical incense sticks is a clean, natural discipline combining sustainable forestry and precision hand-rolling:
1. Sustainable Forest Foraging of Resins & Herbs:
Tribal women forage naturally exuded Sal dammar resin (Dhuna) from wild forest reserves in Latehar and Khunti, harvesting resin without damaging the tree cambium. Concurrently, fallen Mahua flowers, Vetiver (Khus) roots, aromatic barks, and wild basil are gathered in season.
2. Solar Dehydration & Fine Stone Milling:
The collected botanical materials are cleaned of bark debris and spread across solar drying racks. Once thoroughly dehydrated, the botanicals and Sal resin are pulverized into ultra-fine aromatic powders using traditional stone hand-mills (Janta) or solar-powered pulverizers, then sieved through fine cloth mesh.
3. Bamboo Core Splint Slicing:
Seasoned wild forest bamboo is sliced and split by hand into uniform, slender splints measuring 8 to 9 inches in length and approximately 1.2 millimeters in diameter. The splints are tumbled in wooden barrels to deburr edges, ensuring they burn smoothly without tilting.
4. Charcoal-Free Natural Dough Kneading (Pata Masala):
The powdered herbal mixture is combined with natural Jigat powder (Machilus bark) and wood powder in precise ratios. Unlike commercial incense, zero charcoal powder, petroleum distillates, or chemical burning accelerants (like potassium nitrate) are added. Filtered water is kneaded into the blend to form a smooth, supple, non-sticky aromatic dough.
5. Traditional Hand Rolling (Chunai / Rolling):
Using smooth wooden rolling boards (Pata), the artisan takes a tiny ball of dough, places a bamboo splint over it, and with a swift, coordinated stroke of the palm, rolls the dough evenly around the bamboo core, leaving 1.5 inches at the base bare for handling. Experienced women artisans roll hundreds of sticks an hour with machine-like uniformity.
6. Dehumidification & Shaded Rack Drying:
The freshly rolled incense sticks are arranged on slatted bamboo drying racks inside well-ventilated, shaded drying chambers. They dry naturally over 48 to 72 hours under regulated airflow, preventing warping, cracking, or loss of volatile essential oils that would occur under direct blazing sun.
7. Natural Essential Oil Infusion & Eco-Packaging:
For specialty aromatic varieties, bundles of dried incense sticks are dipped into pure natural essential oil infusions (such as distilled Lemongrass, distilled Vetiver, or pure Sandalwood extracts) and allowed to cure for 24 hours. The finished agarbattis are hand-packed into recyclable paperboard tubes and handmade paper cartons, ready to fill sacred and domestic spaces with the pure fragrance of Jharkhand's living forests.
